The Rack
The rack was a notorious instrument used during the Middle Ages and beyond. It consisted of a wooden frame with rollers at both ends and ropes tied to the victim's wrists and ankles. By turning the rollers, torturers could stretch the victim's limbs, dislocating joints and tearing muscles and tendons, often causing excruciating pain and permanent disability.
2. The Iron Maiden
The Iron Maiden was a coffin-like device with spikes on the inside. Victims were placed inside the Iron Maiden and the door closed, causing the spikes to pierce their flesh. While there is debate among historians about the authenticity of the Iron Maiden as an instrument of torture, its image has become synonymous with medieval cruelty.
3. The Judas Cradle
The Judas Cradle was a pyramid-shaped seat with a sharp point at the top. Victims were forced to sit astride the point, which penetrated their anus or vagina. The torturers would then apply weights to increase the pressure, causing severe internal injuries and often leading to death from infection or hemorrhage.
4. The Pear of Anguish
The Pear of Anguish was a pear-shaped metal device inserted into the victim's mouth, anus, or vagina. When a screw at the top was turned, the device expanded, causing extreme pain and often mutilating the victim's orifices. It was used as a punishment for blasphemy, adultery, or other perceived moral transgressions.
