What is the last battleship ever built and where is it currently located

The last battleship ever built was HMS Vanguard of the Royal Navy, completed in 1946. Here's an overview of its history and ultimate fate:

HMS Vanguard: The Last Battleship Built

Specifications:

Displacement: 44,500 tons (standard), 51,420 tons (full load)

Main Armament: 8 × 15-inch (381 mm) guns in four twin turrets

Speed: 30 knots

Complement: Approximately 1,975 officers and crew

Design and Purpose: HMS Vanguard was conceived during World War II but completed afterward. Its design incorporated main gun turrets originally built for the battlecruisers Courageous and Glorious, which had been converted to aircraft carriers. This decision was made to expedite construction during wartime, but the ship was not finished until after hostilities had ended.

Service Record: Vanguard served as the Royal Navy's flagship for much of its active career. However, it saw no combat action due to its post-war completion. Its most notable role was as a royal yacht for King George VI and the British royal family during a state visit to South Africa in 1947.

Decommissioning and Fate

HMS Vanguard was decommissioned in 1960, as the Royal Navy shifted its focus toward aircraft carriers, submarines, and guided-missile ships in the post-war era. Despite its advanced design and capabilities, the age of the battleship had come to an end, rendered obsolete by air power and missile technology.

The ship was sold for scrap in 1960.

It was dismantled at the Faslane shipbreaking yard in Scotland.

Modern Status of Battleships

While Vanguard was the last battleship built, the last operational battleships were from the U.S. Navy's Iowa-class, with USS Missouri (BB-63), USS New Jersey (BB-62), USS Iowa (BB-61), and USS Wisconsin (BB-64) seeing service into the late 20th century. These ships were modernized with missile systems and electronic warfare capabilities during the Cold War but were eventually retired.

Current Locations:

USS Missouri is preserved as a museum ship at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

USS New Jersey is a museum ship in Camden, New Jersey.

USS Iowa is located in Los Angeles, California.

USS Wisconsin is preserved in Norfolk, Virginia.

No battleships remain in active service today, marking the end of a
