The title of the largest caliber gun ever mounted on a destroyer belongs to the Japanese Akizuki-class destroyer of World War II, which featured 100mm (3.9-inch) dual-purpose guns. However, when discussing unique destroyers with exceptionally large-caliber guns, the distinction often goes to special-purpose ships that pushed the boundaries of the destroyer classification.
The Exception: The French "Super Destroyers"
Among these exceptions, the French Fantasque-class destroyers and the slightly larger Mogador-class destroyers stand out. These ships, sometimes referred to as "super destroyers" due to their size and armament, carried 138.6mm (5.46-inch) guns.
