The Rape of Nanking (Nanjing Massacre)

Although primarily committed by Japanese forces, the German government was an ally to Japan and provided indirect support. The Nanking Massacre involved the mass murder and rape of thousands of Chinese civilians and disarmed soldiers by Japanese troops in 1937-1938. German diplomats in Nanking documented the atrocities and tried to offer protection to Chinese civilians, highlighting the complex relationship between the Axis powers.



3. Massacres in the Soviet Union

Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of the Soviet Union, led to widespread atrocities. The Einsatzgruppen, mobile killing units, followed the advancing German army, executing Jews, communists, and other perceived enemies en masse. One of the most notorious massacres occurred at Babi Yar near Kyiv, where over 33,000 Jews were killed in two days in September 1941.


4. The Destruction of Lidice

In retaliation for the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, a high-ranking Nazi official, German forces obliterated the Czech village of Lidice in June 1942. All male inhabitants over the age of 16 were executed, women and children were deported to concentration camps, and the village was razed to the ground.


5. Oradour-sur-Glane Massacre

On June 10, 1944, the SS Panzer Division "Das Reich" destroyed the French village of Oradour-sur-Glane. They massacred 642 residents, including women and children. The village was set on fire, and the survivors were machine-gunned as they tried to escape.


6. Warsaw Ghetto Uprising

In April and May 1943, Jewish inhabitants of the Warsaw Ghetto staged an armed uprising against their German oppressors. The Nazis brutally suppressed the revolt, systematically destroying the ghetto and killing thousands of Jews. The survivors were deported to extermination camps.


7. The Massacre of Sant'Anna di Stazzema

In August 1944, German soldiers massacred approximately 560 civilians in the Italian village of Sant'Anna di Stazzema. The victims, including many women and children, were gathered in the village square and gunned down, and their bodies were burned.


8. The Leningrad Siege

The Siege of Leningrad by German forces lasted from September 1941 to January 1944, resulting in the deaths of over a million civilians due to starvation, bombardment, and disease. The deliberate starvation tactics employed by the Germans aimed to break the city's resistance.


9. Katyn Massacre

While the Katyn Massacre, where over 20,000 Polish officers and intelligentsia were executed, was committed by Soviet forces, it was initially blamed on the Germans. The German discovery of the mass graves in 1943 was used for propaganda purposes, but it underscored the brutal realities of occupation and shifting alliances during the war.
