25 Rare Historical Photographs From World War I

When the First World War broke out, an unprecedented number of women decided to participate in some way in the conflict as they saw dozens and dozens of men leave their homes and jobs to fight on the front. Since they could not enlist in the common way, these brave women answered the call by filling the enormous manpower gap left by those who were now soldiers deployed on the battlefield.

Women participated in almost every aspect related to the conflict: their efforts in factories and the agricultural sector allowed soldiers to remain well armed and well fed, while switchboard operators kept vital lines of communication active. On the front lines, ambulance drivers, doctors and nurses saved millions of lives and helped keep troop morale intact. If there had not been women helping and working like everyone else, it is very possible that the United States and its allies would have lost the war.

On the occasion of the centenary of the conclusion of the First World War, we offer a look back at the brave women who fought and won the war.
