Why is Gal Gadot being attacked for being chosen to play Cleopatra in a movie?

When 1963’s “Cleopatra” debuted it was more notorious for its controversy than its cinematic experience; a massive budget and accusations of racism dogged the iconic 60s film. Now it seems that Hollywood is getting ready to repeat the experience with Gal Gadot who's set to star as the Hellenistic ruler of Egypt.

With Gal Gadot starring, “Monster” director Patty Jenkins, and “Altered Carbon” creator Laeta Kalogridis, it seems assured that at least the upcoming Cleopatra movie will not be an a-historical sexualized portrayal of the leader, and will likely focus on the Greek monarch’s attempt to rule the Roman Empire through wit, diplomacy, and cunning.
